British Values
At Lodge Farm Primary School, we believe it's important to actively promote fundamental British values.
These are:
- Democracy
- The Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
These values were first outlined by the government in the 'Prevent' strategy (2011). We teach, promote, and reinforce them regularly in various ways, including through weekly assemblies such as our 'Picture News' sessions. https://picture-news.co.uk/
Democracy
We give children lots of opportunities to have their voices heard. Our 'Lodge Farm Parliament' meets regularly to discuss important issues. The children vote for a Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. Children who want to join a committee apply for a position, and the new Prime Minister makes the final decisions. Our committees include an Environmental Committee, House Captains Committee, Play Leaders and Wellbeing Committee.
We also:
- Give pupils a broad understanding of, and encourage respect for, public institutions and services.
- Teach pupils how they can influence decisions through the democratic process.
- Encourage pupils to get involved in decision-making at school and make sure their voices are heard.
- Use drama techniques, like 'Conscience Alley', to help pupils learn how to argue and defend their points of view.
- Help pupils express their views clearly.
- Show how perceived injustice can be challenged peacefully.
- Help children understand how our parliamentary system works.
The Rule of Law
We consistently reinforce the importance of laws, whether they apply to the classroom, the school, or the country. From their very first day, pupils learn our school rules: Be Safe, Be Kind, Be the Best that You Can Be. This helps them to understand that rules are in place for everyone's safety and well-being, and that there are consequences when rules are broken.
Individual Liberty
Within our safe and supportive environment, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices and express their opinions. We support them in developing their self-confidence and self-knowledge. We provide boundaries for pupils to make choices safely, through the provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our e-safety and PSHE lessons.
We also:
- Encourage pupils to take responsibility for their behaviour, as well as understanding their rights.
- Challenge stereotypes.
- Implement a robust anti-bullying culture.
Mutual Respect
Respect is one of our core values at Lodge Farm. Pupils learn that their behaviour has an impact on their own rights and those of others. We promote respect for others through our behaviour policy, our assemblies, and our curriculum. We encourage children to respect each other's opinions, even if they are different from their own.
We also:
- Promote good manners and courtesy.
- Encourage listening to and valuing different perspectives.
- Have clear expectations for behaviour.
Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Understanding of different faiths and beliefs is enhanced through religious education studies and engagement with members of different faith communities. Diversity is actively promoted through celebrations of different cultural events and festivals. Prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour is challenged. Tolerance is believed to be gained through knowledge and understanding.
We also:
- Promote understanding of different cultures and ways of life.
- Challenging prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour and language.
- Celebrating diversity.
